Desert Rose Membership Appreciation Banquet
Wrigley Mansion, Phoenix
Tuesday, September 30, 2008
You are invited to a
special evening of dinner and dancing at the Wrigley Mansion to
celebrate YOU. Without you the Desert Rose Romance Writer’s
Organization would not exist. A 1930’s theme is planned for this
special evening so come dressed for the era that defined romance.
It was a time when Greta Garbo made her first “talkie”;
John Wayne swaggered on to the screen in his first major role; the first
three Nancy Drew mysteries were introduced to the public and Orson
Welles’ scared the beejesus out of us. The Motion Picture Code was
adopted; Charles Lindbergh arrived in New York, setting a cross-country
flying record of 14.75 hours; New York City installed the first traffic
lights and the first Mickey Mouse strip was published in the New York
Mirror.
A time when the Wrigley Mansion was built by chewing gum
magnate, William Wrigley Jr. as a 50th wedding anniversary
gift for his wife Ada.
Appropriately named “La Colina Solana” - the sunny hill,
it was one of five homes for the Wrigleys. They used it as a winter
cottage. The mansion cost $250,000 – 300,000 to build and it remained
the largest private residence in the state until the 1960’s. It is
16,850 square feet, has 24 rooms and 12 bathrooms, eleven fireplaces and
it was the smallest of the Wrigley homes.
Today, the mansion is owned by George A. Hormel, one of
the heirs to the Hormel meat packing family. His main purpose was to
preserve the landmark and restoring the mansion to its 1930’s splendor.
